Today, we have pharmaceutical drugs to treat erectile dysfunction. These drugs include Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. Simply by getting a prescription from the doctor, you can treat erectile dysfunction and perform better in the bedroom.

However, Viagra was not the first treatment for erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction has been a medical issue that dates back to ancient times.

Erectile dysfunction in ancient Greece and Rome

According to author Angus McLaren, author of Impotence: A Cultural History, Ovid mentioned in Amores a narrator’s inability to perform in the bedroom with a woman he loved.

“Yet I lay with her limp as I loved out…I could not cast anchor where I meant.”

This narrator later describes his penis as “dead” and “drooping more than a rose picked yesterday.” He describes how “he’s bolt upright” when he should not be, and how when he wants to get it up, he became “weaponless” and no longer stirs. It is a source of great distress for the narrator.
