“If only you knew this fantasy’s charms, if only you could understand what one experiences from the sweet illusion of being no more than a woman! Incredible inconsistency! One abhors that sex, yet one wishes to imitate it! Ah! How sweet it is to succeed.”

These words are from the Marquis de Sade’s work, The Misfortunes of Virtue, a book that shocked the world with its flagrant sadomasochism, debauchery, and, yes, bisexuality.

Before this line, the main character, Justine, stumbles upon two men having sex with one another in an open field behind a tree. Once they spot Justine, they turn their sights towards her, and the two men take turns spanking her and penetrating her with abandon.

The point was to be as offensive as possible.

Sade was unashamed.

Sex is Politics

Marquis de Sade was far from just an ordinary smut writer, contrary to popular belief. Erotica didn’t exist yet. This was the first time this sort of unashamed erotica had ever been laid to print. Sade was a master of using sexuality to defy convention and challenge the political order of his day.
