Blood flows into the genital region as an intricate network of nerve cells fires in every direction. Five inches (on average) of delicate tissue pulsate and throb. The organ hardens, expands, and longs to be stroked. The tip gets the most sensitive. It aches to be licked.

This is the story of arousal. You might have thought I was describing a penis. But I wasn’t. I was describing the clitoris’ role in female arousal.

How does this story end? A recent survey found 64 percent of women versus 91 percent of men had an orgasm in their last sexual encounter. This has been commonly referred to as the “orgasm gap.”

Often, men focus on penetration and define their sexual prowess by how long they can last from when a penis enters and exits the vagina. But here is a statistic that always surprises men — the average time from insertion of the penis into a vagina until ejaculation is only 5.4 minutes.

I don’t know a lot of women who can orgasm that fast. Yet, there has not been a single research study on how long it takes women to orgasm from oral sex. Why is that? Why do we continue to overvalue intercourse while undervaluing clitoral stimulation?
