The Shamefulness of Slut-shaming

Why everyone needs to mind their own business

Slut. We’ve all heard this word before, and I’m sure many people reading this have been called a slut at some point in their lives. Based off of the definition above (the first one, anyway), I’m not even sure why ‘slut’ is considered an insult.

Slut-shaming is a dated and appalling practice. It’s not new information that sex is just as pleasurable for women as it is for men, so why are single women who love having sex being shamed for a behavior for which men are lionized? Men are, if not necessarily praised, then at minimum accepted for being ‘sluts.’

It’s time women were extended the same courtesy.

The expectations that women are held to in order to be “wifey material” are a form of patriarchal control, conceived and instituted longer ago than written human history.

Last I checked, it’s 2018. I fail to see how they can still be remotely relevant.

“I was like, am I gay? Am I straight? And I realized…I’m just slutty. Where’s my parade? -Margaret Cho

In my experience men love to hit it and quit it and, more often than not, aren’t looking to be exclusive (which is absolutely fine by me, btw) so riddle me this: what am I supposed to do when you’re done fucking? I’m going to go out and get some more dick, not sit around waiting for Mr. Right, because it’s definitely not you. Sex is a basic human need; if you’re single and not getting it regularly from a significant other, then you have a right to get laid by as many people as you want and not be put on blast for it. But remember, if you do choose to be promiscuous, please practice safe sex!

What does a slut look like? Depends on the filter. #ProudSlut

Everyone has a custom set of morals specific to them, but those that are more demure have no more right to judge us sluts than we have to judge them. Women aren’t only judged by the private choices we make, either; just one example: women are held to an unfair standard of dress. I live in Texas, where it’s dangerously hot outside, and I can’t count how many times I’ve been forced to wear jeans in 100-plus-degree weather (thousands). I can’t speak for everyone, but I don’t dress the way I do because I want attention — it’s because I don’t want freaking heatstroke. Not that women have to have an excuse for dressing how we want to dress — I’m just pointing out that it’s not because we want people ogling us.

“Cultivate your curves- they may be dangerous, but they won’t be avoided” -Mae West

I’m in a monogamous relationship at the moment, but I certainly used to embrace my slutty side. Having multiple partners is a right-of-passage many people experience in their late teens/early twenties. I’ve been with men from school, Tinder, rehab, bars/clubs — even one man recently out of prison whom I met at a gas station (practice safe sex!).

I never liked the idea of waiting until marriage for sex. I’m a fan of variety and only having one cock for as long as I live sounds incredibly unappealing. I encourage everyone reading this to try something sexual you’ve never done before, whether that be having a one-night-stand, utilizing a new toy, trying a new orifice, or even just wearing some sexy lingerie under your clothes (it’s quite exhilarating).

“Happiness only real when shared.” — Christopher McCandless

Sex is a beautiful experience, and sharing it with another someone or someones can amplify and augment that beauty. When is more beauty ever bad? So the next time you get called a slut for having “too much sex”, simply tell that person(s) thank you and walk away so they can kiss your slutty ass.
