The Sex-Positive Blog is looking for writers!

If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to spend some time browsing through our library of content to get an idea of what we’re about, and who we’re looking for. We want writers who are:

  • Talented and energetic — from a wide variety of backgrounds and lifestyles. Our content is only as valuable as the breadth of human experience it speaks to, and
  • Sex-positive — We don’t judge or tease when it comes to sexuality, and while we’re happy to speak truth to power (often with tongue firmly planted in cheek), we never ‘punch down.’ We’re passionate about topics like Sexual Freedom, Ethical Polyamory, Reproductive Rights, etc.
  • Inclusive — we’re committed to bringing others into the sex-positivity fold, meaning that we don’t just ‘tolerate’ a wide diversity of viewpoints and perspectives, we embrace them.
  • Activist — the country as a whole, and especially Texas, has a problem with sex education, the problem being that we don’t provide it to students, or when we do, it’s poorly-conceived, partisan or unhelpful. We want to get involved, be a part of the process and ultimately elevate the level of sex discussions and debates.

The position has the potential to become a paid gig (based on consistency, growth of readership, etc.), but once you’ve written a few pieces for us, and we have an idea of who you are and what you’re like to work with, there are lots of opportunities to test out sex toys and write about them (and you would get to keep the item you’re reviewing, of course), which is a nice perk.

Who are we?

Publications on Medium bring individual voices together around a common theme and shared purpose. Communities and organizations (or individuals) can tell their stories from one central point of distribution, combining the diverse efforts of many unique voices for greater impact on Medium’s reader network.

That’s from Your-Friends-at-Medium’s Perfecting Your Publication page, which is a terrific resource we refer to often here (the emphasis, in bold, is ours). Our common theme and shared purpose is promoting sex-positive, inclusive sex education and sexual wellness; sexual wellness can take on a lot of forms, and ultimately, our philosophy is that as long as all parties involved consent and enjoy the sex, then that sex is good and pleasurable and worth fighting for.

Our community is a robust one, probably best labeled as (to borrow a term I first heard from Sarah Brynn Holliday): Sex Nerds (#SexNerds). We’re not perverts or nymphomaniacs or any of the other pejorative epithets that get thrown around. We’re just really, really enthusiastic about sex education and sexual well-being, which includes sexual freedom — a fundamental, natural right, in our opinion. We were fascinated by/with sex growing up, feel some type of way about the erosion of women’s reproductive rights and aren’t scared to speak up in any situation (often, to a fault). We love and support the community of sex bloggers and sex nerds who toil away, doing the unglamorous work of perfecting and producing incredible content for the rest of us to consume and enjoy. We’re proud to be a part of it! Some of our favorite and most consistently-awesome sex bloggers are, in no particular order:

Sarah Brynn Holliday

JoEllen Notte

Hey Epiphora

Dr. Liz Powell

‘Diverse’ and ‘unique’ are two pillars of our editorial strategy. We encourage you to explore our staff writers’ bodies of work, both for The Sex-Positive Blog and elsewhere. The full Sex-Positive Blog writing staff list can be seen on our About page.
