What Memes Can Teach Us About Consent

By Susan Sullivan, Prevention Campaign Specialist for NSVRC

We already know that consent doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be as easy as asking. But for those that need the concept broken down even more — or just a good laugh — these memes get the job done.

Participants in the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s #30DaysofSAAM Instagram contest created the memes to fulfill a daily prompt. And just like that, popular internet memes became the vehicle to talk about things like respecting boundaries, bodily autonomy, and affirmative consent. Overall, the memes drive home the importance of consent — reminding us all to check in with our partners before beginning any sexual activity, including kissing, cuddling, and any kind of sex.

If these memes have you wanting to brush up on your consent IQ, that’s understandable. We know that the vast majority of people want their partners to feel safe, comfortable, and respected, and asking for consent is a big part of that. Make sure you know when and how to ask for consent — and what to do if your partner says ‘no.’ Afterall, asking for consent is pawsitively healthy, normal, and necessary!
