Can AI replace humans in terms of creativity

Humans are the one that invented AI, so is there a possibility that AI will replace humans one day?
First, let me define creativity. It is to make use of one’s imagination to come up with something. So the problem here is : does AI have imagination ? I will provide the answer to this question within this essay. The second definition needed is the word “art”. What is art? It is the application and expression of creativity.
The main difference between the art produced by AI and those produced by humans is the element of “consciousness”. The Runway ML “generated” the images, but not “created” them. The software has to be run on existing databases. Humans on the other hand, produce art as a way of expressing their emotions. Humans are fully aware of what they are displaying when they create art.
We often hear the term: “nature is art.” Or “nature is an artist.” It seems to contradict with what I have said about consciousness. The reason why humans say this is because all things in nature exist in their most original form, there is no replication or processing of them. As for consciousness, it is humans that add their own emotions onto them. It is humans that imagine them to be something else, the human brain processes them into art. Of course, different people have various depictions of what they see. The reason why I say AI cannot replace human creativity is because there is no imagination involved. AI does not have emotion, they simply carry out tasks that are programmed into them.
However, AI can produce art. It can be used to combine existing artistic ideas to generated new ideas. Taryn Southern, an artist, is the first person to release an album fully composed and made by artificial intelligence.

As the first solo artist to release a pop album composed and produced using artificial intelligence, “Break Free” received more than 1.7 million views on YouTube and was featured in Fast Company, Wired, Billboard, Forbes, and more. “Break Free” was the first single off her upcoming album, I AM AI, released on September 27th, 2018. As part of the album, she released the world’s first tokenized song (Taryn Song Token) that enables artists to share royalties with fans/collaborators using Ethereum smart contract. It could be noted here that for AI and computers in order to produce art, they have to be based on existing information. Humans are the ones to input the data. Although they might seem new at first, if we look or listen closely at the art produced by artificial intelligence, they are just combinations of existing ideas.
The aim of our project is to inspire designers to design new fashion items, which is one thing that artificial intelligence can’t do. The reason why humans run the world when they have comparatively low physical abilities compared to other living creatures is due to the fact that humans have creativity. They know how to invent tools to make their lives easier. Unless technology could be developed into a stage such that a human brain can be completely replicated, it is unlikely for artificial intelligence at this stage to mimic human intelligence.
Not that I am saying AI can’t be creative, for instance, during class, we have been shown a video clip of a drummer and a computer creating beats. The computer records the beats that the drummer played and created new beats that corresponded to it. AI can be creative, but it is unable to replace human’s creativity. In other words, AI is a tool for human beings to express their creativity through works of art, artificial intelligence itself cannot produce original art. Taking our group work as an example, we manually selected the images for the Runway ML to train. Our images have to be taken with a white background and doesn’t have anyone wearing these dresses. These processes can only be done by human beings as we have to select the criteria for the images to be trained. Unlike humans, artificial intelligence is not able to reprogram or to renew itself unlike humans. AI can only be further developed through the manual input of humans. Taking fashion as an example, it is impossible for AI to create a new fashion trend by itself.
There has been recent fears whether AI could be developed into a stage such that it’s intelligence surpass human beings and eventually take over us. It is undeniable that artificial intelligence might take over certain jobs such as factory workers in the future and cause unemployment. However, in terms of creativity in the world of art, we don’t have to worry about whether artificial intelligence will replace designers or artists at the moment.
