2017 has been quite a year for Java professionals: from the long-awaited release of Java 9 to the edition of Java EE 8, JUnit 5 and Spring Framework 5, from Java EE moving to Eclypse foundation and to open sourcing the commercial features of Oracle JDK with Java passing to biannual release cycles, the Java community definitely has some food for contemplation.

The Joker conference was another major event that gave the geeky community a chance to get together and discuss all the changes and learn from the speakers and each other.

This year’s Joker conference harbored more than 1200 professionals, and among them, 7 SFLians who enjoyed the Java-only time and the talks. Today we asked two of the participants of Joker 2017 to share what Joker was all about and what advantages it held for the participants.

The only girl “on board” of Joker 2017’s SFL team, Mary Mirzoyan, said:

“I really loved the way Joker was organized. After each talk we got a chance to approach the speaker, ask questions and listen to what other participants had to ask. The cases we brought up allowed us all to learn quite a lot.

Finding out about some platforms that could help automate some of the manual tasks we perform was also very refreshing. It’s always good to be able to save some time on automating stuff.

The structure of the talks was also very well-thought. There were three levels of complexity of talks: The Introduction to technology for newbies, the second part for practicing engineers, and hardcore part for advanced level professionals. This way everyone could derive what they needed because the timetable of the talks made sure there were presentations of different complexity at all times.

The choice of the speakers was awesome: they were all well-known professionals in the niche who engaged us in interactive knowledge sharing sessions filled with learning, jokes and fun”.

Another participant, Arshak Avagyan, shared:

“The number of professionals that attended was stunning! The topics were chosen very carefully, so they could trigger the interest of most developers, and so were the speakers- well-known professionals who aced the topics they presented. Also, I enjoyed the Retro Gaming Console with games like Sega and Nintendo, the food and drinks, the venue. All in all, it was really cool”!

While 7 SFLians were in St. Petersburg following the talks live, the team back here in Yerevan had access to live broadcasting of the talks so they could enjoy the conference as it was happening.

If you’re a Java enthusiast interested in Joker’s talks, the good news is you can get to watch some talks here. Also, we will get to highlight some of the most interesting topics in separate posts.
