Coming Together to Solve SF’s Toughest Problems — Public Private Partnerships on Display

Earlier this month, Mayor Breed kicked off the 5th Civic Bridge Demo Day, a culminating event where City teams and private sector volunteers presented their solutions that address challenges related to making San Francisco cleaner, safer and more accessible to all residents.

What happened in four months

The Civic Bridge program, created and led by our team at the Office of Civic Innovation, is a cohort-based program that recruits volunteer teams from local companies to contribute 20% of their time to work with City staff over a 16-week period.

Yesterday, in front of a crowd of more than 200 public and private sector professionals, this year’s nine teams presented innovative solutions to critical City issues:

  1. Improving the Complainant Experience: Department of Police Accountability (DPA) + Slalom
  2. Improving Access to Services for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Communities: Office of Transgender Initiatives (OTI) + Fuse Corps
  3. A San Francisco Model for Medical 9–1–1 Calls Not Requiring an Ambulance: Department of Emergency Management (DEM) + California College of the Arts’ Cosine Collective
  4. Designing a Service Pilot for the Street Medicine Team: Department of Public Health (DPH) + fuseproject
  5. Delivering on Tenant Right to Counsel: Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development + Fuse Corps
  6. Upgrading the Pit Stop Operational Model: Public Works + Digitalist
  7. Street Cleaning: Piloting for Increased Efficiency: Public Works + Harvard Business School Community Partners (HBSCP)
  8. Data and Related Services: DataSF + Adobe
  9. Sharing, Learning & Deepening Impact of Pro-bono Work Across the City: Office of Civic Innovation (OCI) + Adobe

But, it’s just the beginning…

This pro-bono volunteer program model is creating a new mechanism to match the technology, design and research skills of local residents with the policy and program expertise of City staff to accelerate problem-solving.

“At Adobe, we want to create opportunities for employees to make a real difference for their communities. We have been proud to participate in Civic Bridge for three years on challenges that support the city we live and work in,” said Michelle Crozier, Director of Sustainability and Social Impact, Adobe. “Our employees gain insight into how local government works and can apply their skills and experience to solve the problems that exist in their communities.”

Since the program’s inception in 2015, Civic Bridge has engaged with 24 City departments on 39 projects, with more than 400 City staff and resident volunteers. The estimated fair-market value of pro-bono support for the program is $3.8 million, delivered through nearly 24,000 volunteer hours.
