Styled like a kampong (Malay for village), Farmart doesn’t appear to be very well maintained and it doesn’t look as sanitary as it is in other parts of Singapore. You can say it is like Singapore stuck in the 70’s. But this was probably done on purpose, all for that kampong feel.

Farmart is the place for kids. And just about anyone who loves animals. When I was young, it was like paradise to me. I would beg my parents to bring me there when it opened more than 10 years ago. When I was there, I was so hyped. Even though admission is free, you could get up close and personal with a great diversity of animals, which are so tame, like

cats

dogs

hamsters

birds

rabbits

chickens

guinea pigs

chinchillas

goats

frogs

fish

prawns.

Pardon my formatting as I’m really excited as I type and forgot how I should type in one straight line just like this.

Hey, give me some carrot!

Just seeing the animals will definitely make you go “aww” and feel all warm and fuzzy inside. There, this is some therapy for the soul. You can also touch and feed these furballs at the Animal Corner (opening hours)! Of course, you will have to pay for the feed which costs around $2. If you wish to bring a pet home, you will have to visit the pet store there.

The stalls there sell a variety of items, ranging from fresh farm eggs to exotic frozen meat like crocodile meat! You may go “eww”, but some people eat it to cure their asthma and for beauty purposes.

Educational tours are available for visiting groups and school children would usually participate in them. Led by the friendly Uncle William, a quail fanatic, the tours will help better your understanding of fish, goats, crocodiles and vegetables. You may wish to contact him if you are interested.

Besides that, for those who pleasure in the thrill of hooking a catch, you may want to try your hand at prawning! The bait given is usually raw see hum (blood cockles) and is quite effective in luring the unmindful prawns to the hook. A barbecue pit is available if you wish to feast on your live catch! Bring some butter and soya sauce along to enhance your eating experience.

When you’ve had enough fun with the animals, it should be around dusk and that’s when you’ll hear your tummy growl. Indulge in the delectable spread offered there! Pick from the BBQ stalls and order your fill which may actually leave you craving for more. Fret not — to put an end to that agony, finish off with some smooth gelato and, there, a happy belly you will have!
