What’s inside a bowl of this celebrated Katong Laksa? In the rich coconut broth are deshelled prawns sliced into halves, fishcake slices and translucent noodles called cu mi fen (粗米粉). Hum (blood cockles) is included in every bowl unless requested otherwise, so let the stall know. In fact, the original laksa doesn’t have hum, but it was popular among the Hokkiens so these cockles slowly found their way into this Peranakan dish.

If you would like, add the pounded basil leaves and a dollop of chilli for an enhanced sensory experience. Of course, please exercise caution with the chilli as there is no turning back — if you know you can’t take spicy food that well, add a little each time, fine-tuning it to the spiciness level that will give you maximum pleasure.

You would also find other variations of laksa in Singapore, such as Curry Laksa and Assam Laksa. But both are unmatchable for the Katong one. Many sellers have stepped up, claiming to be the authentic Katong Laksa, and back then, they even waged a Katong Laksa war. It seems like one among them withstood competition better than the rest — that is, 328 Katong Laksa. Its strong contender, 49 Katong Laksa, has already closed for good a few years back.

Katong Laksa is usually accompanied with otah — a grilled slab of fishcake made with tapioca starch and spices. Lime juice also makes a great accompaniment as it eases the fieriness in your mouth. That said, bring a pack of tissue along, ‘cos you really might need them.

This is one heavenly Peranakan dish you die die must try*.
