India’s 1st brew pub:
Thanks to Gurgaon, that India got its microbrewery culture. India’s first few breweries such as Rockman’s and Howzat opened in Gurgaon. Doolally from Pune also claims as India’s first.

Some interesting facts:

  • Market is worth INR 10,000 crores.
  • Monthly revenue per brewery is around INR 50 lakhs and above.
  • More than 5000 litres beer is sold per month per brewery ( approx).
  • Space required to set up a facility varies between 1000 square meter and above.

Delhi has ‘zero’ microbreweries:
Its an uphill task for beer lovers to go to Gurgaon to drink fresh beer.
There is a huge market, which does not have access to microbreweries. Only South Delhi has easy access to Gurgaon.

As per Google Map…

  • North is more than 40 kms away.
  • East is more than 50 kms away.
  • Even West is 30 kms away.

Why is there no microbrewery in Delhi?
Government’s policy is the only reason.

  • Before 2015: As per the policy, polluting industrial units were not allowed in Delhi. Breweries are also part of the list of polluting industries. So, they could not be in Delhi.
  • After 2015: AAP gave approval in 2015. So did LG. However DDA is not giving the clearance.

How does it impact Delhi?
Delhi is missing out because of lack of microbreweries.

  • More breweries mean more jobs.
  • More breweries mean better social spaces.
  • More businesses mean more tax revenue for the government.
