For the first time in Arab entertainment history, the critically acclaimed play arrives on the small screen

Available for streaming worldwide, “Bodyguard” streams exclusively on Shahid VIP under the patronage of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) and MBC GROUP

For the first time in Arab entertainment history, Egyptian superstar Adel Imam’s critically acclaimed play, “Bodyguard” is coming to the small screen.

Under the patronage of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA) and MBC GROUP, “Bodyguard” arrives exclusively on Shahid VIP, Shahid’s subscription-based premium service. Part of MBC GROUP, Shahid is the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s leading Arabic-language streaming platform, home to a plethora of original and exclusive premium content.

“This is an exciting moment for us, because we have been waiting for years for the perfect time for ‘Bodyguard’ to show on screens across the Arab world and wider territories. And what better place for us than on Shahid VIP!” commented director Rami Imam. “‘Bodyguard’ is a production that is incredibly close to my heart, because it marked the early beginnings of my theatre-focused directorial career. It was during this show that I was able to apply all the skills I learned through studying international theatre, drawing inspiration from performances in London, the United States and elsewhere. I credit ‘Bodyguard’ with paving the way for both my TV and cinema work later on in my career.”

Reflecting on the 11-year run of the hit production, Imam continued: “We truly grew as a team during that time, both professionally and personally. For instance, I had just gotten married when the play began, and over the years, I celebrated the birth of my children — the grandchildren of Adel Imam. It was a proud moment to have them attend performances later on.

“But it also showcased my father in a new light — taking on such a distinguished role that was very much challenging and pushing boundaries at the time — and introducing audiences to a very unique story.”

AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE

“Bodyguard” won’t be restricted to the MENA region — the renowned play will be available for streaming on Shahid VIP worldwide, allowing fans of Imam access to one of his most important stage productions of all time — no matter where they are based. This is a unique opportunity for fans to be transported to the Arab world’s longest stage production.

One of the most iconic figures in Arab TV and cinema, Imam has starred in over 100 movies, as well as a multitude of TV series and theatrical productions. He is commonly referred to as “Al Za’eem” (The Leader) by his fans, named after one of his other popular plays.

“BODYGUARD”: WHAT TO KNOW

Running from 1999 to 2010, “Bodyguard” became known as the longest stage production to be created in the Arab world, clocking in at a total of 180 minutes. The play was attended by sold-out crowds in Egypt and the region for over a decade, which was a major commitment for the cast involved.

The arrival of “Bodyguard” on Shahid VIP follows successful negotiations spearheaded by the GEA. Since 2010, the Egyptian superstar has been offered a number of deals to bring “Bodyguard” to TV screens, none of which had materialised until now.

Written by Youssef Maati and directed by Imam’s son, Rami Imam, “Bodyguard” tells the story of Adham — played by Imam — a prisoner who makes friends with a well-known businessman, Saad, who is also serving time. With Adham approaching release, Saad strikes a deal with him to work as a bodyguard for his wife, Aisha. Over time, however, the friendship sours as each discovers a series of betrayals that ends up with Saad wanting to frame Adham. However, an obstacle stands in his way.

In addition to Imam, “Bodyguard” also features Ezzat Abu Aouf, Saeed Abdul-Ghani, and Raghda.

“Bodyguard” drops on Shahid VIP February 26, 2021.
