Armed Conflicts and Attacks…

Foreign involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as of Thursday, 18 April 2024, saw German law enforcement arresting two German-Russian nationals.

The arrest came after an alleged military sabotage plot was discovered. The plot was apparently carried out on behalf of Russia. The intent was to undermine military support for Ukraine.

Disasters and Accidents…

A Kenya Air Force Bell UH-1H Huey II, on Thursday, 18 April 2024, reportedly crashed in Kenya’s Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The crash, including Chief of Defence Forces Francis Omondi Ogolla, cost ten lives. President William Ruto declared three days of national mourning.

International Relations…

The United States, on Thursday, 18 April 2024, vetoed a UN Security Council resolution supporting the State of Palestine joining the United Nations. A veto coming from the United States, noting how history has unfolded, wasn’t exactly surprising.

The vote saw 12 member states in favour, the United States opposed, and two member states abstentions. The abstentions were the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Music…

Forrest Betts, one of two surviving original members of The Allman Brothers Band, died from cancer and COPD at his Floridian residence on Thursday, 18 April 2024. He was 80.

Betts, a highly accomplished guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer, was the founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. Jai Johanny Johanson, The Allman Brothers Band drummer, is now the only surviving original band member.

Sports…

The National Hockey League board, on Thursday, 18 April 2024, reportedly approved the relocation of the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes to Salt Lake City, Utah.

The currently unnamed expansion team, most likely containing the city’s name within the team title, will play their home games at the Delta Center.

Curiously, meanwhile, the Coyotes franchise will be deactivated pending the construction of a new arena in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
