Dennis Waterman, of “The Sweeney” fame, dies aged 74
Dennis Waterman, best known for such television series as The Sweeney, Minder, and New Tricks, has died aged 74. Waterman, during his six decades long-career, appeared in 29 films and more than 60 television series.
Waterman fans, when it comes to his television productions, either point to The Sweeney or Minder as being the actor’s best work. Waterman co-starred with the late John Thaw in the television series The Sweeney.
The Sweeney, televised on ITV from 1975 to 1978, spawned two big screen films. Waterman’s character, Detective Sergeant George Carter, was the perfect foil to Thaw’s Detective Inspector Jack Regan.
This is Your Life, a hugely popular ITV celebrity chat show, came to The Sweeney. The chat show chronicled the lives of popular theatre, television, radio, and film personalities.
