2018 has been a record year for French foodtech

With 10 fundraisings exceeding € 5m, the year 2018 shows a real change of perspective for the French foodtech. Ultimately french foodtech startups are expected to have raised more than 240M€ over a year, which is an absolute record and confirms that France is becoming a world reference foodtech ecosystem. This is all the more remarkable as there is virtually no funding in the most active segment of delivery as we can see them in other geographies (Deliveroo, Takeaway, Rocket Internet in UK, Netherlands or Germany).

From what we could gather as information, 43 french foodtech and agtech startups have raised more than 1M € (and certainly more, if we count the unofficial surveys) and on any type of value propositions all along the Food and Ag value chain confirming an undeniable dynamic of entrepreneurship from field to plate. Ag and ingredients startups weight for half of funds raised, followed by restautech startups with 60M€ raised, making this segment an undeniable specialization for France.

In addition let’s also highlight the very notable M&A activity for this year, with a special mention for the takeover of Naturex by Givaudan for € 1,3B this year :

Naturex — Givaudan
QuiToque — Carrefour
FoodCheri — Sodexo
GoCater — EzCater
750g international — Groupe SEB
Adoria — Accor
CookAngels — Norac
Wineadvisor — Leclerc

SoBio — Carrefour and Planeta Huerto-Greenweez (Carrefour)

Let’s also note the record project of Ynsect, which is said to have secured the creation of a mega plant worth 150M€+ next to Amiens

2019 will be bigger for French foodtech
