Stuck behind closed eyes

How many dreams does this creature watch on a daily basis? [Photo by Егор Камелев on Unsplash]

In your dreams, you travel faraway places
That don’t exist in the first place
People you haven’t met in long ages
Greet you as if nothing has changed
And tell you things least expected
Of them to spill and of you to listen
Sometimes in jest, mostly in wonder
With a touch of suspense in the air
Whether you laugh, whether you smile,
Behind closed eyes, behind naked despair.

In your dreams, you become somebody else
Your words change and so does your world
You can’t figure out the difference
Between your lies — or what indeed is true?
You act like a robot abandoned in a maze
Some weird characters, some friendly face
Enjoying the short ride, you skip scenes
Once in a dessert before turning into greens
Everything seems strange; no care for time
Nobody wears a watch, nobody really dies.

In your dreams, you consider it possible
To alter the realities of your everyday life
You used to be a coward who won’t fight back
And yet you choose to chase that ghost
Till she disappears into thin air
A part of you remains aware of sleep
A part of you believes everything is real
Both these parts fight each other to pulp
Just to see how far your mind is willing to go
Before you wake up to and jog your memory.
