A 22-year-old college student from Hangzhou has credited his recent win at a bodybuilding tournament to hard work, determination, and diet.

A month before the China University Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship, Zhang Nu says that he began consuming 70 egg whites a day. That dietary dedication paid off with him becoming the champion in the 168 cm classic bodybuilding category.

After Zhang’s story went viral, netizens applauded Zhang for his hard work, but also started questioning his diet. Zhang has responded that for professional bodybuilders eating that many egg whites is not a big deal.

Egg whites are a favorite source of protein for bodybuilders, containing around 3.6 grams of protein and 17 calories — meaning that Zhang was consuming 252 grams of protein and 1190 calories a day purely from egg whites.

Of course, egg whites alone were not responsible for Zhang’s win. He says that he began seriously training to become a bodybuilder two years ago. His body fat percentage is down to 5%.

Before Zhang began working out… and after.

But netizens say that they are ultimately less worried about Zhang’s fitness, and more about his wastefulness. “You eat 70 egg whites a day. What happens to the egg yolks?” asks one Weibo user.

Last year, a 20-year-old female college student from Chengdu took home a gold medal in the 51st Asian Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship in Ulaanbataar. She said that her preparation for the event included eating 10 egg whites a day. Amateur.
