Apple dropped from 24th floor hits 3-month-old baby in head, puts her in coma

It’s likely that even if the infant wakes up, she will have suffered permanent brain damage from the unfortunate accident

In a tragic, freak accident, an infant girl has fallen into coma after an apple was dropped from the 24th floor of a residential high-rise, falling straight on her skull.

3-month-old Tongtong was in the arms of her grandmother, taking a walk outside of their Dongguan apartment building on March 9th when the fruit plummeted down and landed on the baby’s head, causing severe swelling and knocking the little girl unconscious.

Tongtong was quickly rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with severe head trauma, skull fractures, ruptured blood vessels in the skull, and traumatic shock. She underwent surgery to relieve the bleeding in her brain, but remains in a coma.

Doctors have told her family that even if she wakes up, it’s likely that her right brain will be clinically dead.

Using DNA obtained from the apple, police were able to find the culprit who dropped the apple — an 11-year-old girl who lives on the 24th floor. According to a local news report, the girl’s father said that his daughter was trying to feed their dog when the apple accidentally got dropped out of the window.

The girl’s father has promised to take responsibility for his daughter’s mistake, vowing to pay for Tongtong’s treatment, as well as compensation for the accident. So far, he has given Tongtong’s family at least 30,000 yuan ($4,700), however, the infant’s medical bills are reported to have reached 130,000 yuan ($20,500).
