In appraising Angelababy’s acting chops, even her husband is willing to admit that she has room for improvement.

“Baby is a very emotional person. If she can tap into that, she will certainly be a great actress,” said Huang Xiaoming during a recent interview in response to his wife’s tearful reaction to his new film Forever Young.

Taken aback, the interviewer asked: “Are you saying that your wife’s acting skills are subpar? Isn’t that too harsh?”

“Bad is bad,” Huang responded with surprising frankness. “This isn’t something to be ashamed of. We’ll just have to try hard.”

Further along in the interview, Huang admits that he’s no Marlon Brando himself, and credits any success that he has had on hard work, adding that his wife often doesn’t like to listen to his constructive feedback.

It’s not clear if Huang’s frank words will cause trouble in paradise for the high-profile couple who tied the knot back in October 2015 with a fairytale wedding in Shanghai, complete with a cake that took a month to make, lots of flowers, and Wang Sicong.

They welcomed their first child into the world last January. Yesterday, Angelababy celebrated his first birthday with a photo on Weibo that’s been liked nearly 600,000 times.

“Little Sponge is how many years old?” she wrote

So far, Angelababy’s lack of talent hasn’t stopped her from having tremendous success as an actress. In the 2017 Forbes China Celebrity List, she ranked 8th, while raking in 200 million yuan (Huang, meanwhile, ranked just 16th, making a mere 170 million yuan).

Over the last six years, the 28-year-old actress has starred in a string of mostly (terrible) rom-coms, making her Hollywood debut in 2015’s Hitman: Agent 47 before playing a major supporting role in Independence Day: Resurgence the following year.

However, most Chinese netizens agree that Angelababy gave the best performance of her life earlier this while watching her husband’s latest flick in a theater.
