Deadly 6.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan, causing hotel to collapse

A strong 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck in eastern Taiwan near the city of Hualian just before midnight on Tuesday causing roads to crack and buildings to collapse.

Taiwan’s Premier William Lai has said that at least two people were killed and 144 injured in the quake, however, rescue work is still ongoing.

One of the buildings that collapsed was the 11-story Marshal Hotel which saw its first three floors crushed. According to Taiwanese media reports, at least 30 people were trapped inside the hotel.

Photos shared on social media show the hotel leaning dramatically to one side, as well as extensive damage to other buildings and roads.
