In an episode of extreme animal cruelty, security guards in the Inner Mongolian capital of Hohhot used concrete to seal a mother dog and her puppy into a hole.

The guards said that since having the puppy, the protective dog mom had started biting people, causing them to decide to bury the animal alive along with its child.

When local residents finally heard about this, they rushed over to break the dogs out of the hole that they had been cemented into. Using a variety of tools, they were able to smash open the concrete and rescue the dying mother dog, quickly providing it with water and food.

The puppy, however, was nowhere to be found, and the rescuers were unable to see all the way down the dark and narrow hole.

According to a Pear Video report, the mother dog survived for 17 days inside of its concrete prison. It’s not clear how the animal managed to stay alive for so long in a place that would seem to have lacked food, water, and even fresh air.

This horrifying story does at least have a bit of a happy ending: after being rescued, the dog was adopted.
