A group of students at a Sichuan vocational college were recently left either puzzled or horrified by one question on their final exam — depending on if they had any clue who their teacher was.

The question asked students at the Sichuan Vocational College of Culture and Communication to simply identify their teacher from a line-up of headshots and then write his/her name underneath the correct photo.

While this might seem like an easy enough question, it would prove rather difficult if you had skipped class all semester.

Those who got the question right would not be awarded any extra points, but get it wrong and 41 points would be deducted from your final exam score. The exam counted for 30% of the students’ final grade.

The university posted the question to its official Weibo account on Monday where it was picked up by various news outlets and went viral. While some netizens said the question was too “tricky,” most agreed that it was straightforward, simple, and fair.

One student told reporters that while he had got the question right, he knew that some of his classmates had chosen the correct photo, but spelled the teacher’s name wrong.

Meanwhile, the teacher who made the test has said that her purpose in writing the question was to see whether her students were taking the class seriously and paying close attention to details.
