On Sunday morning, highway police in Hangzhou spotted a young woman walking on the side of an expressway dragging her luggage along behind her.

Concerned about her safety, officers pulled over and asked just what was going on. Tearfully, the woman explained that she was from Yingshang county in Anhui province, while her boyfriend was from the provincial capital of Hefei. They both worked in Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan district and were on their way back to Anhui to spend the Spring Festival holiday with her family when they got into an argument in the car.

Apparently, that argument got so heated that the boyfriend ditched her on the side of the expressway along with luggage, the People’s Daily reported.

After hearing this tearful explanation, police got the boyfriend’s number from the woman, called him, and arranged for a meeting. Officers then drove the woman to the meeting place where the couple continued to bicker. However, after 20 minutes, and with the help of police mediation, their problem was sorted out well enough and they continued together on their way to Anhui.

Over the last few days, this story has blown up on Chinese social media, with most netizens expressing their general amazement that the couple ended up deciding to stay together. Many have suggested that the woman ought to dump her “loser boyfriend” before it’s too late.

“Now, he will dump you and your luggage on the side of the expressway. Later, he will dump you, your luggage, and your child,” wrote one Weibo user.
