On the evening of March 22nd, a man in the Shandong city of Zibo was driving back home after drinking when he crashed into an electric scooter carrying a woman and child.

Rather than stop, the man sped away from the scene. Later that night, he was arrested by police at his home, who told him that the scooter he hit was carrying his own wife and son.

The man, surnamed Zhang, told police that he, his wife, and his son had gone to a relative’s home that night for dinner. During the meal, he had a bit to drink. Afterward, he drove home in his van, while his wife and son took an electric scooter, The Paper reports.

On the way back, Zhang slammed into that scooter. Apparently unaware that the scooter had been carrying his wife and son, he quickly fled the scene.

Residents who heard the accident called for an ambulance. Unfortunately, Zhang’s son died at the hospital while his wife was placed in intensive care.

Zhang is brought back to the scene of the accident.

The case is now on trial.

A somewhat similar tragedy occurred in the Anhui city of Wuhu in 2015 when a man drove past an injured elderly woman on the side of the road, only to later discover that the woman was his own mother. Sadly, by then, it was too late to save her.
