Kangaroo dies after visitors throw rocks at it in Chinese zoo
They wanted to wake it up
One kangaroo was killed and another was injured at a zoo in south China last month after visitors threw rocks at them to get them moving.
According to Global Times, a 12-year-old female was pelted multiple times by tourists at Fuzhou Zoo in Fujian province. One of the rocks shattered her left toe while another ruptured her kidney, fatally injuring her.
Days later, a 5-year-old male was also struck by rocks. Fortunately, he only suffered scratches to his right foot.
Zoo employees said visitors have been throwing rocks at the kangaroos to wake them up, which they tried stopping by removing stones in the area and installing surveillance cameras around the park. But the problem still persists.
“These adults see a kangaroo sleeping and go pick up rocks to hit it with,” said a zookeeper surnamed Zhang. “We’ve cleared out all the rocks from the habitat area, and they just go look for them elsewhere, it’s disgusting!”
The zoo’s kangaroos are not the only animals in danger. Every holiday season, the monkeys and black bears suffer from digestive issues due to tourists feeding them snacks such as cake.
So far, no charges have been brought against the visitors.
