LOOK: Shanghai’s most ‘expensive’ shared bike graveyard
Real estate along the same road goes for 70,000–100,000 yuan per square meter
While there are many, many, many shared bike “graveyards” in China, perhaps none is as “valuable” as this colorful one on Shanghai’s Haining Road.
In a vacant lot where some of the city’s historic “shikumen” lane houses once stood, there are now hundreds upon hundreds of shared bicycles, lined up in rows after being found parked illegally on the sidewalk or street.
At the turn of the 20th century, most people in Shanghai lived in shikumen-style buildings. However, more and more of these lane houses have torn down over the years to make way for China’s development and prosperity.
Only, sometimes, because of one issue or another, the lots where the shikumen once stood do not become residential high-rises or flashy shopping malls, instead they stay vacant, finally serving some sort of purpose thanks to China’s shared bike boom.
According to NetEase, real estate nearby on Haining Road goes for between 70,000 to 100,000 yuan per square meter.
