A man was spotted yesterday morning in the city of Guangzhou casually strolling down an alleyway while carrying the severed head of his wife, which he tossed into a trash can.

Sickening footage of this act circulated around Chinese social media yesterday, horrifying all who watched it, before it was expunged by censors.

Later in the day, Guangzhou police released a short statement saying that the suspect had turned himself in at 8 am that morning and had confessed to murdering his wife.

The suspect has been identified as a 31-year-old man surnamed Zhang from Hubei province. His wife was a 28-year-old woman surnamed Xia, also from Hubei province. They lived together in a rented home in Guangzhou’s Haizhu district.

Zhang allegedly told police that he had killed his wife following a domestic dispute. It’s not clear what the couple were fighting about and how it escalated to murder and beheading. No other details have been released about this case at this time.
