Only two Shanghai restaurants make it to this year’s Asia’s 50 Best list once again

Ultraviolet and Fu He Hui are mainland China’s sole claim.

Two restaurants from Shanghai continue to be mainland China’s only representatives at this year’s Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, as eateries from Japan, Hong Kong, and Thailand led the charge.

Announced on March 27, avant garde restaurant Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet stayed at number eight, no change from 2017, while fine-dining vegetarian spot Fu He Hui climbed to 30 from its last year’s position of 48.

Ultraviolet, which bills itself as a multi-sensory, immersive restaurant, also received The Art of Hospitality award for combining theatre with a deep level of attention to service.

Around Greater China, Hong Kong had the most number of restaurants on this year’s list with nine spots, the highest being Amber at number seven. Taiwan claimed three positions with the highest being Raw at 15, while Macau’s Jade Dragon got one spot at 35.

Japan, however, had the bragging rights of the most number of restaurants on the list with 11 spots. The top ranking eatery was Den at number two.

The number one spot for 2018 when to Gaggan in Bangkok for the fourth consecutive year, which was joined by eight other restaurants from Thailand. You can find this year’s entire list here.
