In pursuit of that perfect souvenir photograph, a group of tourists were spotted recently scaling an elaborate Buddhist carving at an ancient temple in Henan province.

Footage shot by another visitor at the time shows the tourists climbing up onto some of the small golden statues set into the wall and taking a seat.

The tourists are also seen posing in front of the big Buddha in the center of the sculpture with one brave guy even daring to climb all the way up to the Buddha’s head.

Dunno if we are more appalled or impressed.

The tourist who filmed this expedition said that what his fellow visitors had done was not only uncivilized, but dangerous as well. Chinese netizens have expressed a similar sentiment, labeling the tourists as “shameless” and calling for them to be punished.

“Why are Chinese tourists discriminated against? It’s because some think that buying a ticket gives them the license to do anything that they want!”one web user is quoted as commenting by Beijing Youth Daily.

The Xianyan Temple (香严寺)in Henan’s Xichuan county dates back to the Tang dynasty (618–907), though it’s not clear if that bas-relief sculpture has been there quite so long.
