The world’s longest subway system is about to get even longer this weekend with the opening of Shanghai Metro Line 17, along with an extension to Line 9.

With 13 stations covering more than 35 kilometers of track, from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Oriental Land, Line 17 will officially begin trial operations on Saturday, allowing those living in the western suburban district of Qingpu to take the metro into downtown Shanghai for the first time. More bus routes are being added so that residents can conveniently commute to the new subway stations.

You can interchange onto Line 17 by riding Line 2 or 10 to Hongqiao Railway Station.

On the opposite end of town, an extension to Line 9 will also be opening up on the very same day, adding an extra 13.8 kilometers of length to the already extremely long line that will now extend from Songjiang South Railway Station in the southwest, past Century Avenue, and far into the Pudong New Area in the east.

Line 9 will also now connect with Line 12 at Jinhai Road Station.

On Saturday, the Shanghai Metro’s total length will have reached 666 kilometers. Here’s a map to help you get your head around that figure.

The new line and extension is part of an ambitious expansion project with municipal authorities announcing last year that they planned to add nine new lines to the city’s metro network by 2025, spanning an additional 250 kilometers in total. Here’s what that will apparently look like…
