Over the Spring Festival holiday, Shanghai was turned into a ghost town — apart from the 4 million or so tourists, of course.

More approximately, the city welcomed 4.43 million tourists during the week-long break, taking in 4.94 billion yuan in tourism revenue, up just a tick from last year.

Here are some more stats for you from the Shanghai Tourism Administration:

  • 1.9 million tourists visited the Bund over the holiday
  • 3.9 million visited Nanjing Road
  • 2.26 million visited Lujiazui
  • 144,200 visited the Oriental Pearl Tower
  • 130,000 visited the Shanghai Wildlife Park
  • 1.71 million visited Yuyuan Garden
  • 289 cruise trips departed on the Huangpu River, carrying 79,000 passengers during the first six days of the holiday.
  • On Sunday, the scenic watertown of Zhujiajiao was forced to prevent any more visitors from entering after reaching its capacity of 14,000 tourists.
  • Shanghai Disneyland was also forced to suspend ticket sales on Sunday and Monday because of sky-high demand.

It’s also worth noting that amid all of this chaos, only 39 people called in to the city’s tourism complaint hotline and no major complaints or accidents were reported.
