That most wonderful time of the year is here once again as millions upon millions journey home to spend the Chinese New Year holiday with their families in what will become the largest migration in human history.

This year, the annual Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun (春运), officially kicked off on February 1st and will continue on until March 12th. During that time 2.98 billion trips are expected to be made, about the same astronomical number as last year.

The first day of the Chinese New Year is February 16th this year, and people across China will get February 15th to 21st off from work (though they’ll have to make it up by working on a Saturday and Sunday). Over the next two weeks, expect more and more people to start heading for the train station.
