Three men forced to pay 90k yuan to groom after ‘wedding prank’ breaks his face
Yet another ‘wedding prank’ gone wrong
A man has been awarded 90,000 yuan after his wedding day ended not at the altar, but in a hospital room.
Back in December 2016, the groom, surnamed Xia, was travelling in a motorcade to his wedding in the Guizhou city of Zunyi when he was suddenly pulled out of his car by three of his friends who bound Xia’s body with packing tape, including his hands and feet, as part of a so-called “wedding prank,” the Guiyang Evening News reports.
However, all the “fun” stopped when, amid all the chaos, Xia fell over, landing straight on his face.
Afterward, Xia was rushed to the hospital where he would have to remain for the following month as doctors performed reconstructive surgery to repair the damage done to his face.
The three men who had tied Xia up declined to step forward to take responsibility for what had happened, causing Xia to take them to court, asking for 120,000 yuan in damages.
On Wednesday, it was reported that the court had reached a settlement of 107,200 yuan for the incident, however, Xia was found to be 15% at fault for his injuries, meaning that the three men were ordered to pay him 90,000 yuan in compensation.
China’s controversial tradition of “wedding pranks” — in which newlyweds are forced to engage in sexual games or humiliated in some fashion on their wedding day — has come under increased scrutiny of late.
Particularly as, earlier this week, a video went ultra-viral on Chinese social media which was rumored to show the drunken father of the groom forcing his son’s bride to kiss him on stage. The family has since claimed that the father was merely pretending to smooch the young woman, acting in accordance with the local tradition of “teasing the bride.”
A short time later, another video hit the Chinese internet showing a man grabbing a bride by the head and forcing her to kowtow. When the woman responded by slapping the man, the audience scolded her, declaring that it was only a bit of fun.
