Traffic cop sacrifices his own life to save pedestrians from driver on rampage
His last words were to warn others to get out of the way
Chinese netizens are paying their respects for a police officer who heroically sacrificed his own life to save others earlier this week from a driver apparently intent on mowing down all in his path.
Surveillance footage from the Hubei county of Jingshan shows a car driving erratically back and forth down a busy street on Monday evening before taking to the sidewalk and driving into pedestrians and parked cars.
At one point, a 50-year-old traffic cop named Liu Guibin arrived on the scene and made the ultimate sacrifice. The Paper reports that as the car sped toward a pack of people, Liu shoved one individual out of the vehicle’s path and shouted “get out of the way!”
Tragically, those were Liu’s last words. He was hit and killed by the speeding car.
The chaos came to an end when the driver crashed on the side of the road. In total, he had killed two people and injured four more.
The driver, a 28-year-old man surnamed Tang was arrested by police. It’s not currently clear what made Tang go on his vehicular rampage, however, police say that he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
