In the spirit of International Women’s Day, a pair of traffic cops in Qinzhou, Guangxi, decided on Thursday to indiscriminately pull over and ticket fifty women whose driving showed no signs of recklessness or abnormality.

Initially indignant at being stopped for no ostensible reason, the lucky commuters subjected to this little profiling exercise were charmed to discover that it was in actuality a gesture of appreciation for their road safety habits.

“No, you haven’t violated any traffic regulations today,” the officers told their targets. “We’re just commending you for your civilized driving.”

Each of the women then received a handsomely wrapped red rose and a pink card featuring a couplet composed of two seven-character lines, reading: “Yield at the pedestrian crosswalk, reduce your speed, give right of way, and drive slowly.”
