After giving birth to puppies, a stray dog was brutally beat to death on a Chinese college campus last week in an act of cruelty that was caught on video and later went viral on social media.

In the video, two guards are seen holding the dog still after trapping it in a net while another colleague goes about bashing its brains in with a stick.

Students at the China Pharmaceutical University in Nanjing who were interviewed on campus by a local news outlet said that the dog was meek creature which had recently become a mother.

Afterward, the university said that stray cats and dogs on campus must be dealt with for the safety of students, but admitted that this situation could have been handled better, promising that next time they will contact animal control authorities.

Public dog executions are a semi-regular occurrence in China. In January, a video of a police officer in Changsha cudgeling a golden retriever to death on the sidewalk ignited outrage and debate online.

Back in 2016, video of a security guard at Shanghai’s Minhang Sports Park beating a stray dog to death with a stick while the animal was struggling to swim in a public fountain led to yet more anger online and a candlelit vigil in the park.
