Amid torrential downpours and gale-force winds that reportedly reached 37 meters per second, part of the roof of the arrivals hall at Nanchang Changbei International Airport Terminal 2 collapsed on Sunday afternoon. According to initial reports by local media, there were no casualties in the accident and regular airport service had already resumed Sunday evening.

Cell phone video that surfaced on Chinese social media revealed a bracing scene in which external components peeling away from the roof of the arrivals hall sent travelers into a panic and set cars parked at the curb of the terminal scrambling to avoid being crushed.

Footage taken from within the arrivals hall showed travelers and security attendants backpedaling away from its glass facade as the debris fell. In images of the accident’s immediate aftermath, warped panels and dangling roofing components were visible:

Built in the late 1990s, Nanchang Changbei International is the major airport in Jiangsu’s provincial capital.
