Over the Spring Festival holiday, a scenic spot in Foshan, Guangdong province demonstrated what would happen if money actually did grow on trees.

To mark the start of the Chinese New Year, the tourist site turned three of its trees into mythical “money trees” (摇钱树) and invited visitors seeking fortune to try to shake down the red envelopes concealing cash tied to its branches.

However, it appears that they were not prepared for how much gusto the visitors would employ in this effort. Footage shared by Pear Video shows tourists violently shaking the trees, sending leaves and a few hongbao fluttering to the ground.

Afterward, tourists are seen opening up their red envelope to find that all of their hard work had earned them just 1 yuan.
