Woman gets scissors stuck in skull, takes public bus to hospital

Doctors found that the scissors had been stopped short of her brain by only two or three millimeters

On Wednesday morning, a villager in Hubei province was working on shearing the leaves off a Chinese toon tree, using a bamboo pole with a pair of scissors attached to the end, when the pole snapped, sending the scissors plummeting down straight into her skull.

The 57-year-old woman surnamed Shen said that she was surprised to not feel much pain after the accident, only some numbness in her head. Deciding that the gnarly pair of scissors sticking out of her skull wasn’t that big of a deal, she and her family chose not to call an ambulance, but instead took a public bus to a hospital in the city of Xiangyang. The trip took about an hour.

Once they arrived at the hospital, doctors found that the scissors were only two or three millimeters away from Shen’s brain. Fortunately, the scissors had gone into her skull at a slight angle. If they had gone in straight vertically, she likely would have been paralyzed, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reports.

During surgery, doctors removed the scissors from Shen’s skull. She remains in the ICU under observation.
