The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals that have been designed by the United Nations Development Programme. The goals are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and are considered all over the world of paramount importance to tackle the social, economic and natural problems that humanity is facing. Climate change, recognized by many as the major challenge of our time, impacts most of these problems. Despite the far-reaching impact of the goals, they are rather broad because they target private and public institutions to drive the change. This is certainly quite important. Nonetheless, don’t you think that individual people should also fight against climate change? If you think that we, the people, can also drive change then keep on reading. It is time to take action!

Following the Annual General Meeting of Global Shapers at the headquarters of the World Economic Forum, several young leaders decided that is time to organize ourselves globally and create 17 Individual Sustainable Development Goals. In contrast to the global goals, they target climate change as the main challenge and they will be very simple actions that anyone could take at home or work. But who would create those goals? Well, guess what? You!

The Global Shapers Cambridge Hub has taken the lead to organize #shapers4climate tweet challenge to create individual sustainable goals on a democratic and representative way. Thousands of climate change marches and events will take place on the 8th September around the world as part of the Rise for Climate day.

STEPS TO TAKE ACTION:

  • On 8th September, tweet about a simple action that anyone could personally do in order to tackle climate change. Pictures are welcome!
  • In the same tweet, challenge and tag someone else.
  • As a hashtag, ONLY USE #shapers4climate. It will be the hashtag for the initiative. This is very important as the Cambridge Hub will be tracking tweets and share with you a report with the best 17 individual sustainable goals of the year!
  • IMPORTANT: Please ONLY USE #shapers4climate as hashtag to create the trend. Handles like @greatorganization, Climate Reality, and We Don’t Have Time, World Economic Forum are very welcome and encouraged to maximize visibility!
  • Any organization that supports the movement will be acknowledged in the document containing the 17 individual sustainable development goals, which will be distributed among millions of people.

EXAMPLES:

“I pledge to use a metallic foldable cup instead of plastic cups. @Greatshaper what would be your climate pledge for 2018? #shapers4climate @greatorganization, Climate Reality, and We Don’t Have Time, World Economic Forum

“I pledge not to use plastic straws. If I need one, I will use a reusable metallic or a bamboo one. @Greatshaper what would be your climate pledge for 2018? #shapers4climate @greatorganization, Climate Reality, and We Don’t Have Time, World Economic Forum

“I pledge to use my own carry bag for shopping every day. @Greatshaper what would be your climate pledge for 2018? #shapers4climate @greatorganization, Climate Reality, and We Don’t Have Time, World Economic Forum

The movement starts at 00:00 GMT September 8th 2018 and will last for 24 h only. We aim to have at least half million tweets to shape the goals. Pretty exciting, right? Get ready and spread the word, we are the last generation that can do something to save ourselves from climate change. The opportunity to shape our future starts very soon!
