2019 has been a hugely exciting year for Shapes AI. In this post, we’ll look back on the year that was for Shapes AI…

UK ‘AI Champions’ Trade Mission to Germany

In February, we were selected to join the Department of International Trade’s UK Trade Mission to Germany. Branded ‘AI & Beyond’, this was an intimate two-day event hosted at IBM Watson and Accenture’s Advanced Manufacturing Unit, in Munich. It gave us a running start to building relationships with world-renowned German companies, including a number of the famous automotive and industrial brands.

Breakthrough technology unveiled

In March, we made the trip to Silicon Valley to exhibit at NVIDIA’s GTC conference. This offered the perfect setting for the grand unveiling of our ‘Deep Visual Reasoning’ technology and allowed us to showcase the breakthrough to a global audience. We are really big fans of this conference (which we will be attending again in 2020) because it attracts senior decision-makers from leading technology firms and organisations given its tight focus on AI and GPU enabled technologies.

Crowned International Computer Vision Winners

In May we headed to Google’s New York HQ to participate in the annual LDV Vision Summit. We took part in their prestigious startup competition where we made our way through multiple rounds of pitching and Q&A for the judging panel of computer vision experts to eventually crown us winners of this year’s competition. We followed a line of distinguished winners from previous years who have gone on to make impactful contributions in the industry. The win both validated our work and generated huge interest in Shapes AI from both investors and large technology firms.

Exhibited at CVPR

We followed our win by exhibiting at CVPR in Long Beach, CA. The conference is widely viewed as the biggest event in the computer vision research community and offers fantastic exposure for companies building innovative solutions in this field.

Towards solving the challenge of toxic video online

At the start of autumn, Dr Dipayan Ghosh the Pozen Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School — joined us on our journey towards solving the growing menace of toxic video content on social platforms. Dipayan is a thought leader in the domain of societal challenges facing social media, with a specialism in digital policy and safety. His work has been covered by CNN, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and many more. A computer scientist by training, he obtained his PhD from Cornell University and went on to advise Facebook and the Obama White House on issues relating to digital safety, security and policy.

Selected for the PnP Innovation Program

Over the summer, we were selected to be part of Plug and Play Tech Center’s innovation program in Silicon Valley. This provided us with the opportunity to interface with industry-leading corporations looking for innovative solutions related to IoT and mobility. Through the program, and later in December, we engaged with automotive leaders in Stuttgart, and then demo-ed at the programme finale in Sunnyvale at the ‘Winter Summit’.

Smart City and Security Expos

We exhibited at two global industry-leading expos: The World Smart City Expo in Barcelona (in November) and the International Security Expo in London (in December). These were two hugely exciting events which offered a unique platform for engaging with public sector organisations and associated tech firms. Our technology is able to help tackle key challenges in keeping our cities and roads safe around the world.

Next year looks to be even more eventful for Shapes AI.
