a poem for floral week

Special thanks to author Tapan Avasthi who inspired this floral poetry prompt for July 2020*

If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it. Bhagavad Gita As It Is 9:26

Recommended Prerequisite Reading, The Beatles George Harrison was a Yogi

Growing up I sorta knew, “I wanna hold your hand,”

Never dreaming of a foreign land

Where I would learn about devotion

Drops of nectar in samadhi’s ocean

Listening to All Things Must Pass

Transported to sitting on acres of grass

Surrounding a temple manor

With sunshine-y smiles and a large “Welcome” banner

A man in a dhoti begged my pardon

Invited me to a tour of the garden

Art lyric memorial to the rock star

One of the Beatles who played lead guitar

Spirals trees, roses, flowers and vines

My Sweet Lord graced trees, benches and signs

Each lyric line full of love and affection

Proving that George had a genuine connection

Gorgeous statues of Krishna playing his flute

Guests decorated in saris who gave me some fruit

Urging me toward Tulasi greenhouse, basil holy

Desiring to marinate in it all very slowly

Tulasi flowers boasted fragrant heliotrope fronds

Swans glided across meditation lotus ponds

Darsan in the temple was the main attraction

Bringing folks of all cultures to visit this mansion

People happily waited holding garlands of mums

Fragrant wreaths held, hearing faint Tabla drums

All flowers intended to offer with love

Etching into my soul the stuff that we write of

Sweet memories engraved in my heart

Aromatic lei reminders 5000 miles apart

Incense, blossoms, candles and ghee

Wishing you too can Awaken and See
