Gladius.
Roman harbinger of death.
Destroyer of druids and celts,
when iron overran the world.

Who would name a flower
after a weapon of ancient wars?

Buds, sheathed in overlapped scales of green,
emerge as frilly petticoats
and then to blowsy blooms,
banishing the sharp edge…
