With a rich understanding of hegemony, we can see life in four dimensions. These “dimensions” are like complementary layers of analysis to help us capture the full texture of every situation.

Hegemony is the word to describe the natural process of negotiating power hierarchies through instruction, self-expression, and social interactions. Applying the critical lens of complex hegemony is like having a multi-focal pair of glasses, where each lens completely changes what you see.

Each perspective offers valuable insight on their own. Synthesizing them together, we can understand how hegemony shapes life as we know it. We have:

  1. Hegemony as Emergence
  2. Hegemony as Guided Self-Organization
  3. Hegemony as Navigation Within Phase Spaces
  4. Hegemony as Generative Entrenchment.

We’ll start with the first layer and build up from there.

1. Hegemony as Emergence
