VOLUNTEERING | FULL-TIME TRAVEL
If We Had Our Own Property, We Wouldn’t Have Time For This
Volunteering time to help others has a greater impact on the world
We’ve just finished a 4-week volunteer gig on Quadra Island — one of the largest Gulf Islands that sits between Vancouver Island and the mainland of Canada on the West Coast. We volunteer through a platform called HelpX, which is a modern version of Wwoof (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms).
It was almost by accident that we ended up at this property. Upon our arrival on Canada’s West Coast, we volunteered at a farm on Saltspring Island, which is located further south. But after only a week, we realized that it wasn’t a place that we wanted to spend more time. To put it simply, the owner was a bit off, and we have worked at these sorts of arrangements long enough now to know that people don’t change, and it’s best to move on, instead of staying and struggling.
Through HelpX, while we were working for the initial lady, Marie from Quadra messaged us to see if we wanted to do some work for her. Although I told her at the time that we had another commitment, on the day that we left the first one, I messaged her back and told her that we were now available.
