Oodles of Doodles for Fun
My doodles have become a fun way to spend some creative time.
Oodles of Fun
I went through a period where every creative thing I did had to have an end game.
Was I going to give it away?
Was I going to sell it?
Is it part of a web design for a site?
This mindset stems from people asking me what I was going to do with a piece of art. What are you going to do with that? What is that for?
It’s a bit of a buzz kill creatively. Nowadays, I have a quick ‘I don’t know’ answer, because I don’t have to have a reason to create. Honestly, at times it’s a sanity saver and the end result doesn’t matter. So, I often doodle.
Rules? What Rules?
Much like my organic styled mandalas for this summer’s monthly challenge here on Share Your Creativity, I don’t follow rules in art. I’m sure there are some that make sense but I’m a bit of a go with the flow artist. This week I needed pockets for a junk journal that I’m working on and decided to make my own.
Dragonflies are my favorite garden critter and so it’s not surprising that one perched on this design.
I traced the design in pencil and then drew in the black line with a 0.7mm black uniball gel pen. I usually use a 1.0mm but the thinner line allows me to add a bit more fine detail.
Once the gel pen was dry, I took a chance to add watercolors to the design. I had no idea if a gel pen was waterproof or not. I guess if I saturated the paper it might have smudged.
The rules went out the window again when I decided that lines were just suggestions. The paint was applied as more of a splash than a brush stroke. That way I didn’t have to worry about being precise. I really like how the colors created a background for the design, rather than being part of it.
