Since I’m an American and most of our foods are not uncommon, and many foods come from someplace else, I can’t even say they are unique to the US. This made finding items to write about where I live a challenge.

Maybe Jillian Amatt - Artistic Voyages will indulge me on this submission. I think it qualifies as uniquely American, and maybe not everyone knows about it, and that is Musubi.

I’ve been to Hawaii seven times, but over the last three visits covering five years, it was my habit to have Musubi, a banana, and Kona coffee with my morning newspaper every day.

Maybe not the breakfast of champions, but certainly a breakfast I enjoyed.

Musubi is wildly popular and commonly enjoyed in Hawaii.

Resembling the Japanese culinary favorite known as onigiri, musubi is made with a base of packed white rice topped with the meat or fish of your choice, wrapped around the midsection with a piece of seaweed.

In Hawaii, the most popular musubi combination is one with Spam.
