Mie Ayam is originally Bakmie — a traditional noodle dish from Southern Tiongkok, mainly in Guandong and Fujian areas. This dish came to Indonesia because a lot of Chinese people moved to Indonesia in the past. Bakmie is literally translated as ‘Meat Noodle’ in English. The original ones used pork shreds on top of the noodle. However, in Indonesia, pork shreds are changed into chicken since many Indonesian Muslims can’t eat pork.

After that, it was also given an additional local twist like sweet soy sauce to the noodles. Eureka! That is how Mie Ayam was first invented in Indonesia.

I accidentally found this Mie Ayam street vendor next to a convenience store near my place. The street vendor cart had a bright pretty red color so anyone could easily spot it. The price for Mie Ayam is only about Rp10.000 or less than $1, and if you want to add meatballs just like the picture that I put here, the price is about Rp16.000 or less than $2.

I didn’t hope much when I buy Mie Ayam at such a low price. However, when the noodles entered my mouth, I felt like I’m in heaven. It’s been a really long time since I tasted such a good Mie Ayam. It had a light salty and peppery taste. The noodles form were curly and thin. The seller only added a few chicken shreds, fried onion, a bit of green mustard and sprouts, and green onion on top, yet it was really amazing!

I could also take a sip of the meatball soup while eating the noodles. It was an exquisite combination. Perfect!

I definitely recommend you to try this street vendor food, Mie Ayam in Indonesia. I hope you enjoy my culinary journey.
