Engagement. If you have been paying attention on Medium, you have heard this word. It is what we all strive for — people to be engaged in our stories. But what does it actually mean?

When readers become engaged in what they are reading, they become invested. Their brain switches from a feeling of hopefully being entertained to intense curiosity and wanting to learn more.

Engaged readers will read the entire article to the end, and they will more than likely clap, comment and maybe even share your article with others. It is in these actions that the Medium algorithm will then pick it up to display it further on people's feeds. This also leads to a boost nominator becoming engaged and deciding that this story needs to be seen by more people.

But how do we write engaging stories? It is a conundrum that many face when trying to craft that perfect article. As a writer that has had many boosts now, and as a publication owner, I would like to impart some of my advice about what I think makes an engaging story and will leave readers wanting more.
